VIETNAM ON A MOTORBIKE
In February 2015 I rode a motorbike down Vietnam, it was an incredible experience. I have been asked quite a few questions around doing the trip.
My journey in total took me thirty days from Hanoi to Saigon, this included several long stops in places such as the Phong Nha, Hoi An and Dalat. I think the most helpful resource I had for the trip was the guides provided on Vietnam chronical, it’s certainly a good website to check out if you haven’t already.
The general questions around the trip
What motorbike did you buy and for how much?
I brought a Honda Win 110 cc from another backpacker, this motorbike did not break down (apart from the chain coming off occasionally)
What maintenance was needed?
I took my motorbike to a mechanic every 500km, I would ask for a change in oil and for them to give it a good check over.
How much did it cost?
I budgeted $800 for the whole journey. I definitely did not spend this much though, I think you can do the trip easily for under $600.
Did you crash?
I did not have a single accident between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, I guess I was lucky. A lot of people do have accidents and therefore it’s really important to understand that it’s extremely dangerous.
Did you have a lenience?
This is a tricky question, some people get motorbike licenses and some don’t. The important thing to understand if you do the journey with out a license you most likely not be insured. I would recommend you get one.
I hope you enjoyed the film I made about the trip.
